Experience Maya culture through hands-on chocolate making in Belize — from bean to bar, the ancient way!

Step into the rich cultural heritage of Belize and uncover the ancient origins of chocolate through this immersive, hands-on experience. Set in one of the country’s cacao-growing regions in Southern Belize, this tour offers a meaningful connection to the traditions of the Maya—where chocolate began.

Guided by local cacao farmers and cultural hosts, you’ll explore the journey of cacao from bean to bar while learning how it has shaped Maya history, culture, and daily life for generations.

From Cacao Bean to Chocolate Bar

Begin with an introduction to the cacao plant and its importance in Maya civilization. Learn how cacao is grown, harvested, and prepared using traditional methods that have been passed down over centuries.

You’ll take part in each step of the process—roasting cacao beans, peeling them by hand, grinding them on a stone metate, and transforming them into rich, authentic chocolate. This is one of the most engaging cultural experiences in Belize, where you don’t just observe—you participate.

A Deep Cultural Connection

Beyond the hands-on elements, your guides will share stories of cacao’s role in Maya ceremonies, trade, and spiritual life. Once considered sacred, cacao was used as currency and offered in rituals—making it far more than just a food.

This experience offers insight into a living tradition that continues to thrive in Belize today.

Taste and Enjoy Your Creation

After crafting your chocolate, enjoy the flavors of your work and gain a new appreciation for the depth and richness of traditionally prepared cacao.
